Polestar® Pilates

Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening muscles while improving postural alignment, flexibility, body control and core stability. It was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century and is now practiced worldwide.

In 2008 Laura became co-owner of a physical therapy and Pilates studio in Burlington, VT. Pilates was her first deep dive into movement and she incorporates the principles of Pilates throughout her work with clients.

Key Features of Pilates

  • Core Strength: Emphasizes deep abdominal, back, and pelvic muscles.

  • Controlled Movements: Movements are precise, controlled, and done with focus and proper breathing.

  • Alignment and Posture: Encourages correct body alignment and balance, helping to improve posture.

  • Breathing: Coordinated breathing is a crucial part of the technique, enhancing focus and efficiency.

  • Flexibility: Many exercises involve stretching and lengthening muscles.

Types of Pilates Apparatus

  • Mat Pilates:

    • Done on a mat with body weight and small props like resistance bands, balls, or rings.

  • Reformer Pilates:

    • Uses a machine called a Reformer with springs, pulleys, and a sliding carriage for resistance training.

  • Trapeze/Cadillac Pilates:

    • The trapeze table or cadillac is a raised padded table surrounded by a metal frame. This frame allows for springs, bars and straps to be attached to it for more movement versatility.

  • Wunda Chair Pilates:

    • The wunda chair is a box shaped seat with pedals. The pedals are spring loaded and allows for more movements in vertical/seated positions.

  • Barrel Pilates:

    • The Pilates barrel is a hip height apparatus shaped like a half circle. It is most often used to train spinal mobility.
